Fujinon High-Performance 17x Zoom Lens
The AG-HPX370 series comes equipped with a Fujinon 1/3-inch 17x zoom lens. Optimized for use with the AG-HPX370 series, this high-performance HD lens incorporates advanced broadcast lens technologies to achieve a compact size, light weight, F1.6 at 4.5 mm f-value at the wide end, and excellent zoom response. The zoom is comfortable to grip and use. Also, quick zoom and auto cruising zoom functions can be allocated to the VTR and RET switches.
Chromatic Aberration Compensation (CAC)
This exclusive technology sets up a conversation between lens and camera which allows for a highly sophisticated algorithm to be deployed that will automatically compensate the registration error that is caused mainly by lens chromatic aberration, and minimize the circumjacent blur.
Dynamic Range Stretch (DRS)
In scenes with mixed contrast, such as when panning from indoors to outdoors, the DRS function automatically suppresses blocked shadows and blown highlights. A gamma curve and knee slope are estimated to match the contrast of each pixel, and applied in real time. When dark, bright, and intermediate shades are all contained in the same scene, this produces excellent gradation for each shade and minimizes blocked shadows and blown highlights. The images that result are enhanced by a visually wide dynamic range.
*The DRS function does not operate in 1080/25p, 1080/24p or 1080/30p mode.Flash Band Compensation
In contrast with the CCD image sensor, which accumulates still images of single frames that are exposed with identical timing, the MOS image sensor uses a rolling shutter system that sequentially scans each line of pixels. This lowers power consumption and enables high-speed drive, but because the exposure timing differs for each line, when an external flash is used, it tends to produce images where the brightness is divided between the top and bottom of the image. This is called the flash band effect. The AG-HPX370 series is equipped with highly accurate flash band detection and compensation software on the camera’s signal processing LSI. By generating pairs of frames containing flash bands, and frames in which a flash extends from the previous frame to the entire screen, and then using the compensation process to adjust the level, the flash band effect of MOS-based imagers is eliminated.
3-Position Gain Selector / 24dB Gain-Up Function
There is a 3-position gain selector, with L, M and H settings. To each setting you can assign a gain value from -3 dB to 12 dB, in 3 dB steps. There is also a USER button - just give it a quick touch to instantly boost the gain by 24 dB.
Newly Developed 20 bit Digital Signal Processor
The AG-HPX370 series incorporates a high-performance 20 bit DSP that handles image rendering processes such as gamma and various detail enhancement functions with exceptional precision. Consuming less power than conventional processors, the new DSP contributes to the AG-HPX370 series outstanding environmental performance.

20-Step Variable Frame Rate
Like the VariCam, the AG-HPX370 series allows undercranking and overcranking common in film cameras, to create fast-motion and slow-motion effects. In 720p mode,* the frame rate can be set to any of 20 steps.
*In 1080 and 480 modes, the frame rate can be set only to 25p, 24p or 30p.

  • · Normal cinematic shooting (at 24 fps, 25 fps or 30 fps) refers to the same rate as used in film cameras. The AG-HPX370 series can record in 1080/24p (over 60i) or 480/24p (over 60i) mode, as well as 720/24p mode. 25 fps or 30 fps is the standard frame rates used in the production of TV commercials, music clips and video software. The AG-HPX370 series can also record in 1080/25p (over 50i), 1080/30p (over 60i), 576/25p (over 50i) or 480/30p (over 60i) mode, as well as 720/25p and 720/30p mode.
  • · Higher-speed shooting (at over 25 fps*) produces slow-motion effects. This is especially effective for high-action scenes like car chases or crashes, or to create a dramatic impact in a scene.
*When the standard speed is 24 fps in 59.94 Hz mode. For a standard speed of 25 fps in 50Hz mode, anything over 26 fps will be overcranked.
  • · Lower-speed shooting (at under 22 fps*) lets you attain a fast-motion effect. This technique can be combined with a warp-speed effect to give special emphasis to flowing water, fast-moving clouds, etc.
*When the standard speed is 24 fps in 59.94 Hz mode. For a standard speed of 25 fps in 50 Hz mode, anything under 24 fps will be undercranked.
  • Native and Over-50p/60p Modes
    • 720p Native Mode
In Native mode, the AG-HPX370 series records images at the frame rate set in the camera. For example in 24 pN mode, it only records 24 frames instead of the normal 60 frames*. Using the AG-HPX370 series to play back the recording at the normal rate, you can preview the speed effect right on the spot, without using a frame rate converter. Native mode also extends the recording time of a P2 card.
*In 25 pN mode in 50 Hz system mode, AG-HPX370 series records only 25 frames instead of the normal 50 frames
    • 720p over 50p/60p Mode
This is a mode for recording 50p-converted or 60p-converted video. For example, in 24p mode, it records 60 frames by applying a 2:3 pulldown. The recording time is the same as in 1080i or 720p mode, but the unit can output a DVCPRO HD stream from the IEEE 1394 connector as it records.* This lets you produce a backup copy using a connected external P2 recorder such as AJ-HPM200 or AG-HPG20, DVCPRO HD recorder.
*Only when the recording format is DVCPRO HD. There is no output when the AVC-Intra codec is used.
    *24p = 23.98p, 30p = 29.97p, 60p = 59.94p and 60i = 59.94i

1080/480 24p Advance Mode (in 59.94Hz mode)
The 1080 and 480 progressive recording systems convert recordings to 60i in 24p, 30p, or 24pA (Advance) mode. The 24p Advance mode uses 2:3:3:2 pulldown, which allows for an easy extraction to a 24p timeline and no quality loss in the process with compatible NLEs.*
*AVC-Intra recording is not possible.* For information on compatible nonlinear editing systems, visit"Nonlinear Compatibility Information." *24p = 23.98p, 30p = 29.97p, 60p = 59.94p and 60i = 59.94i
Scan Reverse Function for Use with Film Lenses
The AG-HPX370 series comes with scan reverse. This function cancels the image inversion that occurs when a Cinema lens adaptor is used.
AVC-Intra Codec
High-quality 1920 x 1080 pixel, 10 bit, 4:2:2 HD recording
Comes Equipped with AVC-Intra Codec
An AVC-Intra codec board is included as standard equipment.
It allows recording in either of two modes: AVC-Intra 100 for full-pixel HD (1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720) images, or AVC-Intra 50 for low-bit-rate, low-cost operation. AVC-Intra is a new codec that further advances HD production. It complies with the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 international standard based on advanced image compression technology, and offers both superb image quality and highly efficient compression. It uses an intra-frame compression system to bring important advantages to professional editing.
In the AG-HPX370 series, a new single-chip digital signal processor is integrated with the AVC-Intra codec circuit. This is another way the AG-HPX370 series reduced power consumption.
High-Image-Quality AVC-Intra 100 Mode
With the same bit rate as DVCPRO HD, this mode supports full 10 bit recordings with 1920 x 1080 pixels. It enables the AG-HPX370 series to capture master-quality video for high-end video production.
Low-Bit-Rate AVC-Intra 50 Mode
This mode delivers video quality very similar to DVCPRO HD, yet is able to do so at bit rates usually associated with standard definition (e.g., DVCPRO 50). AVC-Intra 50's lower bit rate doubles the recording time per P2 card over DVCPRO HD and lowers storage requirements for editing.

HD Multi-Format Capability, Including Native 24p
The AVC-Intra 100 and 50 codecs let you record in a choice of HD video formats: 1080/25p, 1080/50i, 1080/23.98p or 29.97p as well as 1080/59.94i. These HD formats bring extra flexibility to all of your production needs. The AG-HPX370 series also supports 720p recording for HD image production in a variety of formats, including 50p, 59.94p, 23.98p and 29.97p.
Selectable DVCPRO HD Recording
The AG-HPX370 series also supports the conventional DVCPRO HD codec. Because the AG-HPX370 series are designed to be used with the AG-HPX170 series/HVX200A series or a DVCPRO HD VTR, it adapts to a variety of system configurations.
48-kHz/16 bit, 4-Channel Digital Audio
The AG-HPX370 series can record full 48-kHz/16 bit digital audio on all four channels. You can freely select the audio source for each channel, choosing from mic-in, line-in and wireless receiver.

The P2 Card: Reliable, Reusable and with Extended Recording Time
P2 cards feature a large capacity of up to 64 GB*1, a compact size, and light weight. In addition to the semiconductor memory’s inherent resistance to impact, vibration and temperature change, the P2 card also offers outstanding reliability. Unlike tapes and discs, it has no rotating or physically contacting parts. It’s built to withstand repeated recording and initialization over many years of use. The P2 card connector is specifically designed to stand up to the repeated insertion and removal involved in professional use. The E Series*2 (AJ-P2E016XG, AJ-P2E032XG, and AJ-P2E064XG) provides lower cost recording capability for those customers with budgetary concerns.

Progressive 3CCD and 2/3-inch Interchangeable Lens System for Full-Fledged HD Video Production

2/3-Inch Interchangeable Lens System
The 2/3-inch bayonet mount allows use of a wide assortment of broadcast and professional lenses from a number of companies*. 2/3-inch zoom lenses make it easier to capture the shallower depth of field often used in professional videos.

Chromatic Aberration Compensation (CAC)
This exclusive technology sets up a conversation between lens and camera which allows for a highly sophisticated algorithm to be deployed which will automatically compensate the registration error that is caused mainly by lens chromatic aberration, and minimize the circumjacent blur.

Progressive 3CCD
The AG-HPX500 series 2/3-inch progressive 3CCD* has a larger light receiving area for higher sensitivity, and achieves an optimal balance among image quality, sensitivity and cost.
The camera process scans at full 1080/60 (or 50) progressive frames a second. It is this initial capture that is the foundation for all of the formats that this camera generates. While the camera does not record 1080P/60(or 50), the signals start there and are either cross converted or down converted to the format being utilized that day.
* The effective image size of the CCD is equivalent to 2/3.2 inches.

APT for Higher Image Quality
Advanced progressive technology (APT) produces higher total image quality by linking the progressive 3CCD camera system with a high-performance digital signal processor (DSP). In APT, an extremely accurate CCD alignment process is used to offset the pixels on the red and blue channels in both the Horizontal and Vertical directions. This allows for additional resolution to be gained from areas of the green CCD which are non-photo-sensitive. The R, G and B color signals from the 3 CCDs are then sent through a 14 bit A/D converter. Next, a 19 bit DSP performs a highly precise calculation* on the signals to generate 1080/60P (50P) video signals. The signals are then converted into HD or SD format and recorded. By using these progressive video signals, with their excellent vertical resolution, as source signals, a high level of image quality is achieved that would be difficult to obtain by interpolating from interlace scans.
* Called an advanced offset spatial process.

HD/SD Multi-Format Capabilities
Supporting 32 HD/SD video recording formats, the AG-HPX500 series meets professional needs in news acquisition and in the production of TV programming, independent films and other demanding video content. Its versatility allows this content to be distributed worldwide. For 1080i/720p HD recording, the AG-HPX500 series uses the DVCPRO HD codec, with its proven track record in higher end production applications. For SD recording, the AG-HPX500 series multi-codec capabilities let you select from DVCPRO50, DVCPRO and DV video quality.

Extended Recording with Four Slots for 64GB P2 Cards
The AG-HPX500 series has four P2 cards slots so you can record continuously onto all four in sequence. Using four of the new 64GB P2 cards, you can record up to 256 minutes of HD recording (1080/60i or 720/60p, 4 cards x 64 minutes = 256) or 512 minutes of SD (DVCPRO 50) recording (4 cards x 128 minutes = 512).

48-kHz/16 bit, 4-Channel Digital Audio
The AG-HPX500 series can record full 48-kHz/16 bit digital audio on all four channels. You can freely select the audio source for each channel, choosing from mic-in and line-in. In addition you can control the audio level on each of these channels independently.

Shooting Performance

A Host of Features and Functions, Including a Variable Frame Rate Function for Cine-Like Video Production

Variable Frame Rate
In 720p mode,* the frame rate can be set from the conventional 24p/30p to any of 11 steps between 12p and 60p (or 50p). Like the VariCam, the AG-HPX500 series allows undercranking and overcranking common in film cameras, to create fast-motion and slow-motion effects.
* In 1080 and 480 modes, the frame rate is fixed at 24p/30p (25p in the 50-Hz mode).

Higher-rate shooting produces a slow-motion effect.
This is especially effective for high-action scenes like car chases or crashes, or for scenes to create dramatic impact.
Lower-rate shooting creates a fast-motion effect.
This technique can be combined with a Slow Shutter Speed to emphasize movements, such as flowing water or fast-moving clouds.AG-HPX500-right

Native and Over-60p (50p) Modes
•720p Native Mode: The AG-HPX500 series records images at the frame rate set in the camera. Using the AG-HPX500 series to play back the recording at the normal rate, you can preview the speed effect right on the spot, without using a frame rate converter. Native mode also extends the recording time.
•720p over 60p (or 50p) Mode: The unit can output a DVCPRO HD stream from the IEEE 1394 connector as it records. This lets you produce a backup copy using a connected external hard disk recorder, such as the Panasonic AJ-HD1400 DVCPRO HD recorder or AG-HPG20 P2 portable recorder.

1080/480 24p Advance Mode
When recording in 1080/24p or 480/24p at 60 Hz, the AG-HPX500 series lets you select 24pA (Advance) mode. In this mode, it performs 60i conversion using 2:3:3:2 pulldown, which maintains higher image quality than ordinary 24p (2:3 pulldown) in nonlinear editing*. In 30p and 25p recording (at 50 Hz), the AG-HPX500 series uses 2:2 pulldown.
* For compatibility details,visit P2 compatibility table

Slow, Synchro and High-Speed Shutter
Used with the variable frame rate function, this allows you to create a blurring effect or crystal-clear stop-motion of sports action. The AG-HPX500 series also features a synchro scan function for capturing screen shots from a computer monitor.
